BRIEF
BNR is a Swiss association dedicated to the digitization of public domain works, primarily by lesser-known French-speaking authors. Its mission is to preserve these texts, promote reading, and give visibility to a literary heritage that might otherwise fade over time.
The organization did not have a clearly defined visual identity. The objective was to create a sober, institutional, and timeless identity that conveyed seriousness and trust, while avoiding an overly modern or complex aesthetic. It was essential that the visual system reflect clarity, structure, and respect for the literary content it represents.
SKETCHING AND VECTORIZATION
Following the institutional and literary analysis, the logotype was developed as an acronym. The full name, Bibliothèque numérique romande, was too long for a clean and minimal identity. Using "BNR" allowed for a more compact and adaptable visual solution. A subtle book shape was integrated within the letter "B," preserving the reference to a library without overloading the composition. As part of the identity system, a reduced "B" version was created for specific applications, reinforcing versatility and scalability. All versions were tested across different sizes and formats to ensure clarity and consistent reproduction in both digital and print environments.
COLOR VARIATIONS
COLOR PALETTE AND TYPOGRAPHY
Once the final proposal was selected, the color palette and typographic system were defined. The primary color was conceptually inspired by the Swiss francophone context, where red is prominently present in the flags of these cantons. This color was refined into a more subdued tone to avoid visual saturation and maintain an institutional character consistent with the association's mission. Secondary colors were chosen to complement the primary tone, providing visual balance and reinforcing content hierarchy. For typography, a sober sans-serif typeface was selected, featuring subtle weight variations that allow for contrast and rhythm without compromising formality. This choice enhances readability while conveying a moderate sense of modernity aligned with the cultural, simple, and formal nature of the association.
